Ravenna city tour

World capital of the mosaic, it waits for you with its perfect combination of art and architecture!

These mosaics, often dating from the V and VI centuries, are to be found in buildings which have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites. A coach will take you to Ravenna, which has been the capital of three different realms: in the V century it was the last capital of the Eastern Roman Empire, later it became the capital of the Barbarian Realm under the Ostrogthics and lastly the seat of the Exarchate of the Eastern Roman Empire.

The splendid monuments testify to the importance of Ravenna as a political, commercial and artistic centre. Arriving by coach in Piazza Baracca we will begin our walk. Ravenna is renowned for its sparkling mosaics, the beauty of which you can admire in Saint Vitale’s Basilica and in the small Mausoleum of Galla Placidia.

It is still possible today to see, in the city’s small mosaic workshops, the master mosaic makers at work, keeping the tradition of the mosaic alive carrying out reproductions of the great masterpieces or applying this art to contemporary works of art.

Literature lovers will be interested in the tomb of the great Italian poet Dante, who, after having been exiled from Florence and having travelled through Italy, died in Ravenna in 1321. The guided tour will end with a visit to Sant’Apollinare Nuovo.
Please Note: this excursion foresees periods on foot and so is not recommended to guests with walking difficulties.
